I just plugged into the last few overs of the Indian innings against England. I was kind of sad to see my side losing, that too by 3 runs! But I was happy to see them go down fighting. We can always find things in a game that could have been done better, like Jadeja's work with the bat, or Raina's disappointing run with the willow. However, that's T20 you see, it is the fickle nature of the game that made some underdogs (read India) win the world title last time, and it is the same nature that took them down this time round. To be honest, if we compare the side we had then, and the one we have now, we have a lot more experience and breadth. But all these things never ensure that you would win a T20 game!
Moreover, I read a newspaper article last night which said, "It is do or die for India". If they were talking about Indian T20 squad and its prospects in the world cup, sure, it was "do or die". BUT, it was not a do or die for the country India as a whole or Indian cricket for that matter! What I do not like about such type of articles/journalism is that they attribute cricket (I don't even think of T20 as cricket, mind you) to the hopes of a nation so huge. I am pretty sure we have better things to care about (illiteracy, power, water, female infanticide, caste to name a few!). I don't think an average Indian even cares about Yusuf Pathan and MS Dhoni hitting 19 runs off the last over, as much as he cares about sleeping with his stomach full, at the end of the day. Cricket is just a deviation from reality and that's where the fun lies, but it should remain at that. Wishes and encouragement are fine, but expecting team India to win all the world cups, and all the matches that they play is unfair. It is not going to happen, and we should make our peace with that.
The bottomline is, the only reason that team India won the last world cup was because they were underdogs and even their fellow countrymen were not attaching a lot of value to the team. At that time T20 matches were just a matter of fun and play, and it remained like that, till India went on to become the world champion. Though I don't think it would make a difference, but this post is to plead to all its readers that whenever you write about cricket, write of it as a game, not as India's only hope, because trust me it's not!
